Reflections on life in the UK in 2006

Reflections on life in the UK in 2006

I recently wrote an article on the PR disasters in the UK in 2006 which prompted me to reflect on how 2006 affected the UK population generally.

Several things occurred to me as key issues: the ongoing saga of the war in Iraq, Muslim terrorists in our midst, water shortages and the unwelcome invasion by Poland. Here is a brief reflection of those issues – I will keep if short because otherwise it might be seen as some rant by a deranged left-winger, which I certainly am not!

Let me start by underlining what an amazing place the UK is to live and work. But, our tolerant and genuinely welcoming nature has been taken advantage of.

Our politicians took us into a war in Iraq largely to support our American cousins. The talk of weapons of mass destruction was a smokescreen for securing oil long term so as to stabilise the global economy; but there is even a case to make for that it was just that lying is not our way of life.

It is possible that the Americans actually had intelligence that those weapons existed. But, if so, then their incompetence is staggering. If not, then they lied. Either way, they dragged the UK into the war with them.

But, from a UK citizen’s perspective, the inefficiency of government departments of getting us into an unwelcome war is overshadowed by the fact that we sent our troops into the field with equipment that wasn’t readily available, didn’t work or was unsuitable. Stories of soldiers being killed, whose lives could have been saved had they not had to lend their safety equipment to others going out on patrol, beggars belief.

This war has sparked off a major menace here in the UK. The Muslim terrorist is a well known phenomenon world-wide, 2006 saw the development of home-grown British Muslims training to be bombers and suicide bombers. This has resulted in a deep mistrust of the whole Muslim community by ordinary people and intolerance.

The courts have had to try cases where Muslim women wanting to go about their work covering themselves completely in black, except for an eye slit. I have to say that I do not want my child being taught by someone dressed like something out of “Star Wars”.

Even in my home town on Basingstoke, a lovely town in which to live, there was a fire bomb attack on the local mosque. This would have been unimaginable just a few years ago!

Let’s now turn to water shortages. Readers from abroad who have visited our green and pleasant land will now that the green fields and hedgerows stay green because of the regular rain. So, the government sit back and let the water supply companies, now largely owned by foreign corporations, put our prices up at the same time as turning a blind eye to them letting thousands and thousand of gallons pour away in leaks in the pipe work. Because global warming is changing our climate, we are having less rain so instead of sorting out the leaks, the water suppliers threaten to cut off supply and put up stand pipes in the street. In the meantime, they ban us watering our gardens or washing our cars. There is no national grid of water pipes to transfer water from areas well supplied to those less adequately supplied, but the authorities talk about piping in water from abroad!

Finally, I come to the Polish invasion. I voted for Tony Blair’s government in each of the last two elections so I feel particularly let down by them. Many people warned them that, when Poland was admitted to the European Union which then allowed their citizens free access to any member country, we would be deluged by Polish immigrants seeking work. Germany, for example, realised this and set limits on the numbers coming into their country,

Our incompetent government assured us that this wouldn’t happen here. 345,000 of Eastern Bloc immigrants have piled over the border.

345,000!

Yes, this is a staggering number. So, what is the impact? It is horrendous. The Polish are in huge numbers in every town. Every shop you go in has Polish staff serving you; some have a reasonable command of English but many just scrape through and you have to struggle to make yourself understood. In factories, many are employed who speak no English at all and cannot mix with their fellow English workers making for divided groups of employees.

They have taken a hold of the rented accommodation making it difficult for local people to find places to rent. They have taken most of the lower paid work leaving English people struggling for work. And, because their way of life is so different – they have no concept of customer care or saying “please” or “thank you” they can be so rude. And they drive round in untaxed and uninsured cars because the driver cannot be charged as it would not be possible to enforce fines or convictions when they give their address, which who knows might even be fictitious, in Poland.

Headline Promotions, Press & PR which my PR consultancy here in the UK, was asked to arrange a series of events for a nightclub for the Polish community. The local Council, aware of problems with the large numbers of Polish immigrants in the area, promised to put some money into this to try and get them together. But, the Police advised against the idea. They said that large groups of Polish men already get together in town centres, drink excessively and then either fight amongst themselves or pick fights with innocent groups of English party-goers. Nice!

So, what is the UK government’s solution to this problem? They are opening the floodgates for hundreds of thousand of Bulgarians to come into the UK when Bulgaria enters the European Union. Other countries are imposing limits but ours isn’t. Yes, you could not even make this up.

If I were a betting man, I would put a few pounds on a civil backlash, for sure, before the Polish flag (pictured) is flying over much of the UK!

Even Christmas is a PR opportunity

In my Christmas e-mail inbox, was an electronic Christmas card from David Seall of EEF South (formerly known as the Engineering Employers' Federation Southern regional office).

You can view this by clicking here.

This was accompanied by a personal e-mail from David, EEF South's dynamic Chief Executive, which said that the organisation was sending this personal greeting with the electronic Christmas card. The money saved was being donated to the local childrens' hospice.

What a great PR coup with social benefits thrown in! It was such a good idea that I wished to share it with you.

And, may I take this opportunity to wish all readers the very best for 2007.

With all good wishes,
John

Your chance to break into the music scene

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
18th December 2006.

Your chance to break into the music scene

Hampshire songwriter Matt Elwood is inviting local singing talent to audition for the opportunity to record some of his extensive collection of songs at an open audition to be held at The Academy Basingstoke on the evening of Saturday 27th January.

John Hicks, general manager of The Academy said, “We are excited about this opportunity to not only help a young songwriter who clearly has a future in the music industry but maybe help someone to launch their singing career.”

“On the evening of Saturday 27th we will be also hosting our monthly cash prize karaoke competition. That is a lot of fun but the cash prizes attract some great local talent so that, even if customers do not wish to sing along, this is a great evening’s entertainment. Admission is a nominal £2.” added John.

However, the open audition adds a new dimension to the evening, as Matt is seeking to find some raw talent with whom we can develop a good working relationship to enable him to promote his songs to the music industry.

As Matt explains “This is will be a great experience for any singer I can work with. As well as being paid for the sessions, their voice will be heard within the industry as I work on developing opportunities for my songs to be recorded by established and upcoming artists”. Matt describes his work as introspective, reflective songs.

Full details of the venue are available on The Academy website (http://www.academyclubs.com/ or by telephoning John on 01256 327273.

Aspiring singers who are unable to make the 27th are invited to submit a demo CD to Matt Elwood, c/o The Academy, Worting Road, Basingstoke RG22 5EE or they can contact John to arrange a separate audition.

New Year means great new line up at The Academy Basingstoke

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
18th December 2006.

New Year means great new line up at The Academy Basingstoke

Basingstoke’s premiere over-25’s sports and live entertainment venue, The Academy in Worting Road, has announced an exciting programme of events for January ‘07.

The popular Country Music Nights hosted by CMR Nashville’s Lee Williams, which are steadily attracting larger numbers of customers, are moving from its Wednesday nights slot to Friday nights. John Hicks, general manager of The Academy said, “Because the country shows feature a wide range from country rock through to gentle ballads, they appeal to a wide audience who may not even realise they are listening to country music. Add in some regular bands and Friday nights makes The Academy the place for over-25’s to find some terrific entertainment.”

On Tuesday 2nd January, The Academy is hosting a New Year’s Eve II Party for staff of local pubs, clubs, restaurants and taxi companies who had to work all over the festive season. Their opportunities to party would have been restricted and The Academy is inviting them to a late New Year’s Eve party of their own. Admission is £2.

On Saturday 6th, a Robbie Williams tribute show, with “Millennium” who have been featured on many television shows, will be live on stage. This will attract many Robbie fans but will appeal to anyone who loves live music. Tickets are £5 and are available on-line at www.academyclubs.com.

Saturday 13th sees the venue’s first “Northern Soul Night” with special guest DJ Danny Dee who recently set a new world record for the longest continuous live DJ performance in a club. His 120 hour record will seem miniscule as he entertains people from 8pm to 2am, a mere 5 hours! Admission is only £2.

Local DJ Ivan Axford joins the line-up on Saturday 20th when his ever-popular Motown, Soul and 70’ & 80’s music show will be featured. Admission is £2 and the show runs from 8pm to 2am.

Friday 26th January sees a very special band on stage when Alan Tyler and “The Lost Sons of Littlefield” are live on stage for the launch of their new album. There has been considerable interest from the country music industry in this event and their show at The Academy is being recorded for later broadcast worldwide on CMR Nashville Radio (www.cmrnashville.net).

“On the evening of Saturday 27th January, we will be also hosting our monthly cash prize karaoke competition. That is a lot of fun but the cash prizes attract some great local talent so that, even if customers do not wish to sing along, this is a great evening’s entertainment.” added John.

“However, this month the karaoke night includes a unique opportunity for local singing talent to break into the music industry, as local songwriter Matt Elwood is seeking to find some raw talent with whom we can develop a good working relationship to enable him to promote his songs to the music industry.”

Nightclub marketing at the sharp end!

Nightclub marketing at the sharp end!
By John Hicks
Headline Promotions, Press & PR

Sometimes, if you want to promote your business, you just have to throw a shed load of money at a PR event.

Recently, a nightclub and sports venue wishing to re-invent itself, did just that. They hosted a show with Spike Edney and his SAS Band supported by an amazing array of stars – Paul Young, Madeline Bell, Jeff Scott Sotto and Tom Robinson.

The SAS band itself comprises some of the finest musicians from some of the greatest bands of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s from Genesis to Whitesnake and 10CC. Spike himself was Freddie Mercury’s keyboard player from “Queen” and performed at “Live Aid”.

The venue, The Academy Basingstoke, is creating a reputation as THE home of live music in the south of England. It’s current licence gives it a capacity of 580 but actually has sufficient space to expand to at least 1,200 and more. The owners have already some a lot of money refurbishing it but have exciting plans for 2007 – this is a huge venue and it will take time and investment. The niche market it is aiming at is the over 25’s on a night out. The nightclubs, themed bars and down-market pubs cater for the under 25’s but they bring the problems of binge drinking – fights, drugs and social disorder – with them.

But there is a problem for The Academy. Estate agents say that the three prime factors with buying and selling property are: location, location and location. All other factors are secondary.

The Academy is located at the back of an industrial estate down an uneven road on the outskirts of Basingstoke. Basingstoke itself is a brilliant location being strategically placed near to the main M3 and M4 motorways only twenty minutes from the M25. But being on an industrial estate does not create the ideal image. The cost of taxi fares across town will not help either.

Having said that, it isn’t in the town centre where all the fights and social problems are to be found at the end of the evening. Not that I want to leave you with the image that Basingstoke is any worse than many large towns – this is a social problem which affects British society and is one that will not be cured until a government finds the courage to put the minimum drinking age up to 21 – it is the under 21’s who are the problem!

So, from a marketing and PR point of view what is the prime objective for the venue? It is to encourage people to come and see what you have to offer and why they should travel out of the town centre for a night out. This is nightclub marketing at the sharp end!

The Academy has a vibrant programme of live music events as well as its core business of being a pool and snooker hall. This attracts a number of people and, as word of mouth spreads the message, the numbers are growing. But that is a slow process so they went for “big bang”.

Spike Edney, the SAS Band, Toyah Willcox, Paul Young, Madeline Bell, Chris Thompson, Jeff Scott Sotto, Tom Robinson is, by any definition, big bang! Big bucks too!

So, did it work? Yes it did. The media coverage was superb with radio and newspaper coverage being extensive. This created a buzz around town as people were talking about the event in coffee shops, McDonalds and in the shops. Staff at The Academy would have people come up to them in the street asking what was happening and people were phoning in for details whilst the website, www.academyclubs.com, was receiving massive numbers of hits every day.

We have an expression in the UK: “You have to speculate to accumulate”. Put simply, sometimes you must risk some money to try and secure a return in the long term. The Academy have put their money and energies into this event to put themselves on the map.

Luckily, the event planning and execution was superb. That was the biggest risk. The huge drawing power of the musicians was enough to attract people’s attention but it would have failed if the event was poorly organised and delivered – but it wasn’t.

Details - like having road signs on roundabouts for people out of town and car park attendants to direct people to parking spaces through to having enough staff on duty to keep the bars running smoothly and glasses off the dance floor – made this a memorable event.

Poor planning would have ruined this event but it didn’t happen that way and I am sure that the reinvigorated Academy Basingstoke will be a huge success.

I cannot wait for the next event but, from a sneaky look at their calendar of events for 2007, my highlights for next year are Jack Smink in February with his tribute to Elvis show, 80’s pop legends “Modern Romance” in June and the legendary country music star George Hamilton IV in September.

In the meantime, I have my memories of meeting Toyah, Paul Young and the lovely Madeline Bell, whom I remembered from “Blue Mink”, but whose stunning performance on the stage at The Academy will be etched on my memory for ever!

Basingstoke is the new home of country music

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
24th November 2006.

Basingstoke is the new home of country music

On Wednesday 29th November, a Basingstoke venue is hosting a celebratory party, to which everyone is invited, to celebrate its key role in the recent launch of a new country music radio station across Europe, CMR Nashville Radio at http://www.cmrnashville.net/

The Academy in Worting Road already hosts a weekly Country Music Night every Wednesday evening. The DJ is country radio & TV presenter Lee Williams who established the original CMR Nashville radio station in the US with leading country personality Ted Randall.

Lee has now brought to life a new European station broadcasting on the internet 24 hours a day at ww.cmrnashville.net and is syndicated through Australian and Greek country music stations. His Wednesday show at The Academy is broadcast on the following Sunday evening.

CMR Nashville is broadcasting online from its various studios in Nashville, London, Ireland and Australia. Now, a new studio is being constructed at The Academy in the style of a coffee lounge so that guests on the show can be interviewed in the relaxed atmosphere of Basingstoke’s premier family entertainment venue. Shows will be recorded in this new studio and customers of The Academy will be able to see what is going on. Their new lunchtime show will go out live from The Academy on weekdays and record labels will be encouraged to bring new artists down to the venue to be broadcast live on air.

As Lee explained: “Every programme has a leading DJ (presenter) with every style of country music being featured including Today’s Country, Traditional, Bluegrass, Americana, Alt Country, Irish Country, Classic Country, and Country music from around the world.”
But one big attraction will be the facility to view the shows being broadcast via a webcam being set up in The Academy’s new studio.

CMR Nashville claims to host the most informative web site for country music outside the USA. Visitors to the site can read the latest news from the world of country music on a daily basis with the latest CD releases, artists’ news, tours, festivals, media, and in fact anything about country music. The Ranch is a free membership area, for another experience whilst visiting the site. As a member, visitors have many benefits including a forum to talk to other members around the world, take part in competitions and receive regular newsletters about CMR Nashville with special opportunities and discounts plus so much more.

The Academy is hosting a special launch party this coming Wednesday, 29th November, to celebrate their new relationship with CMR Nashville and the public are invited!

Henry Smith’s Country Dreams Band, probably the top UK country music band, will appear live on stage and Lee Williams will be dee-jaying from 8pm to midnight. The show will be broadcast live on http://www.cmrnashville.net/ as it happens so at least everyone has the chance to listen in. Admission is only £5 and is for over 18’s only.

There will be some special guests from the world of country music in the venue, to wish the station well with its new venture, and to support the development of The Academy as the regional centre for country music. These include some top celebrities including Dave Sheriff, recently nominated at The Radio Awards and whose new album is already topping the country charts, and the beautiful Rachael Warwick who was a massive hit at the International Country Music Festival.

But Lee is delighted to say that there is one very special guest – Cathy McManamon – “Anita” from the smash hit West End & touring show “Girls Night Out”. Not because she is bringing along her brother, a leading light with The Pogues, but because Cathy has kindly agreed to share her passion for country music by singing her forthcoming record release live on stage! Why the Basingstoke Academy? As Lee explained: “The venue’s claim to be the regional home of country music has some credibility. With acts like Henry Smith, Easy-Rider coming in December and even down to having the legendary George Hamilton IV appearing next year, I do not know of any venue like it. CMR Nashville are proud to be associated with The Academy and will do all it can to support them. Next year will be an exciting one for country music in the south of England and The Academy will be at the very heart of it.”

Full details of forthcoming events are available on The Academy website (http://www.academyclubs.com/) or by telephoning John Hicks, General Manager of the venue on 01256 327273.

From “wild thing” to angry man - Pete Staples releases Iraq War protest song

From “wild thing” to angry man!
by John Hicks
Managing Director of Headline Promotions, Press & PR

I attended a charity fundraising event for BBC Children In Need (“Pudsey Bear” campaign) at The Academy Basingstoke at the weekend and who should come on stage but the legendary Pete Staples.

Pete was guitarist with THE TROGGS whose international hits of the 1960’s, songs such as “Wild Thing” and “Love is all around” (featured in the award-winning film “Love Actually”), are still massive favourites on the dance floor today.

Music is still Pete’s passion and he spends much of his time penning new songs. His latest song I DON’T KNOW WHY has been recorded by his protege Karen-Ana and he introduced her to an enthusiastic audience at the south of England’s principal 24/7 snooker & pool hall, sports bar, Chinese restaurant and live music venue.

Karen-Ana (pictured with Pete Staples) sang it beautifully but this lovely ballad has a hard edge and may well become an anthem for the anti-Iraq war movement.

So what motivated this “wild thing” of the 60’s to become involved in a war thousands of miles away? This is the question of particular interest to people who know Pete - one of the nicest, gentlest, people in the pop music industry.

As Pete explained: “To be caught up in a war that never seems to end must be one of the most depressing situations imaginable; especially when you were led to believe that the end was in sight.”“This is the plight of the Iraqi people. These thoughts led me to compose this song in sympathy.”“My emotions were intensified last year when I lost both my mother and sister six weeks apart. At the time I was half way through composing a Christmas Carol and I just never had the will to complete it.”

“After watching and listening to all the awful events that the Iraqi people were experiencing and the huge loss of life, it occurred to me, that I had found a ‘home’ for my tune and set about composing the words and completing the song.”“What more can I say, it’s been written with a sense of loss on my part and also in recognition of all the Iraqi people who have also lost their love ones.”“I am proud of the finished product and owe a great deal to Karen-Ana who is one of the finest female singers I have ever heard. Chris Holland’s talent on the arrangement, keyboard and engineering has made for a first class production. This, combined with Andy Jones superb guitar skills, all go together to produce one of the most haunting songs you will ever hear. Iraqi people – my thoughts are with you.”

I DON’T KNOW WHY was released on 20th November in the UK and available as an Internet download on 5th December. Further details are available at www.uniquefeelings.co.uk where a haunting clip of the song can be heard.

So why Basingstoke? Pete explained: “Not only are Karen and I residents of Basingstoke but so are Andy and Chris who is a local teacher. In addition, the recording studios are also located in Basingstoke. There is a huge amount of musical talent in Basingstoke and we chose The Academy to host our launch party because it is a leading live music venue in the region.”

It was fascinating to meet Pete and Karen-Ana; she is a wonderful singer so I am delighted that they have teamed up.

This protest song will have its political dimension but my DJ friends say that they will play it for the melody rather than any message it sends.

Andy Kyriacou pulls out of world record attempt

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
4th November 2006.

Andy Kyriacou, of 80's pop legends "Modern Romance" (pictured centre), had to retire from his Guinness World Record attempt to set a new continuous drumming record after 12 hours with an injured hip.

Andy's attempt was part of The Academy Basingstoke's fundraising week for Children In Need which includes Yeovil-based DJ, Danny Dee, seeking to set a new 120 dee-jaying marathon record and a pool team trying to break the current record for a pool marathon.

During the course of the attempt, Andy's hip became very sore and he reached a point after 12 hours where, reluctantly, he felt that he could no longer continue.

Andy said: "I am very disappointed, but the pain became too much to handle. I am very grateful to my principal sponsors Yamaha who loaned me some amazing kit, to Dawsons Music for their support and to The Academy Basingstoke."

"On the up side, I have helped The Academy to raise money for Pudsey Bear and I am discussing with Guinness World Records if I have still set a new record as I was playing unrehearsed to music. That will take a while to negotiate so we are in suspense! In the meantime, I hope the good people of Basingstoke will come along to support Danny Dee and the pool record breakers in their terrific efforts to get into the record books whilst raising money for Children In Need" Andy added.

The Academy's fundraising efforts reach a climax on Saturday 18th November at 8pm when Danny should reach his 120-hour goal. After the celebrations, local singer Karen-Ana will launch her new CD written by Pete Staples, formerly of the 60's mega-band The Troggs. Pete and Karen-Ana will then judge a karaoke competition in aid of Children In Need.

Full details are available on The Academy website (www.academyclubs.com) or by telephoning John on 01256 327273.

Three new World Records to be set at Basingstoke?

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
4th November 2006.

Your chance to be part of world record attempts

The Academy family entertainment centre in Basingstoke is offering its facilities free of charge to individuals, groups and businesses wishing to fundraise for BBC
Children In Need this year.

John Hicks, general manager of The Academy said, “We are excited about this opportunity to help people to raise money for Children In Need, a charity close to our heart. We have a unique venue with snooker, pool, sports bar, restaurant, functions room and DJ entertainment and live music, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

“We will be pleased to host any stunts or world record attempts in aid of Children In Need during the week of 11 – 18 November 2006. It could be anything from someone wanting to spend time in a bath of baked beans to a team wanting to undertake a marathon dance routine.” added John.

The Academy is already hosting a record-breaking attempt by Andy Kyriacou, lead singer with the 1980’s pop legends “Modern Romance” who had hits with such songs as “Everybody Salsa” and “Best Years of our Lives” which was featured in the movie “Shrek”. Andy will seek to break the existing 84 hour drumming record by drumming for at least 100 hours, and may go on to 120 hours. Sponsored by Yamaha, Andy will have 5 minute breaks every hour but will otherwise drum non-stop with just a few seconds between songs.

Andy’s backing tracks will be provided by another world record contender, DJ Danny D, who is attempting to set a new world record for the longest live DJ performance in a nightclub. Danny will play music and entertain customers continuously for the 120 hours. The existing official Guinness World Record is 87 hours but Danny undertook a 100 hour marathon for charity in 2000.

In addition, The Academy is hosting a pool marathon in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record as club members Micky Piper and Kevin Ward seek to break the present 74 hours and 19 minutes current record.

Club member Aaron Sheridan has also challenged bar supervisor Rob Hall to a pool contest – the best of 499 frames! They will play non-stop starting from Sunday 12th November and the match will last approximately 4 days – without sleep, just 5 minute rest breaks every hour.

Two members of the bar staff, Sinead Galway and Mary Cullen, are doing their bit. They are holding a sponsored sleepover in the venue for five days and five nights during which time they will work in their pyjamas! The have already raised over £250 in sponsorship and are donating their week's wages to Pudsey Bear.

The 7-day long fundraising event for Children In Need starts with a show at The Academy starring “Abba – The Rivals” live on stage, supported by DJ Julie who will be entertaining the audience from 8pm until 2am, with the opportunity to enjoy classics from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and to either chill out or dance the night away on the splendid dance door.

On the Wednesday, Danny will be joined by Country Music Radio & TV Presenter Lee Williams of CMR Nashville Radio for an evening of country music. Danny will continue to spins the discs and Andy will drum along to a different beat to that which he is used to.

On Friday 17th November, Children In Need Day, staff and customers from The Academy will be rattling the bucket in the top of town seeking support from shoppers and town centre workers.

In the evening, The Academy’s usual Friday night over 25’s motown, soul and classics of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s will be continue to be played but with Danny being supported by Resident DJ Ivan Axford.

On Saturday 18th November, all businesses that have undertaken fundraising events are invited to celebrate with a special Pudsey Bear party with live music and a fun karaoke, with local DJ Ivan, with cash prizes to be won. Before the karaoke starts, Pete Staples (bass guitarist with the 60’s superstars THE TROGGS whose hits include “Wild Thing” and “Love Is All Around Us”) will introduce his protégé, Karen Ana, who will perform her new CD release. Pete and Karen will then help judge the competition.

As John explained: “Not only can organisations or individuals use our venue to fundraise, but they can also volunteer as witnesses or first aiders for the world record attempts. We need volunteers across the complete week, day and night. In return, they will participate in setting new world records, help fundraise for Pudsey Bear, maybe meet new people, enjoy some of our superb facilities and each receive a certificate to say they participated in breaking world records. This will be a lot of fun for everyone involved.”

Fosters Twist - in a twist

Foster's Twist in a twist?
A personal reflection by John Hicks

The Foster's PR machinery is first class - as a visit to the website will show you.

But, a client wanted to enter the Foster's competition for bars' displays but, when they tried to use the website "submit" form it doesn't work! That isn't good!

So, to be helpful, I went to main Foster's website to let them know. I clicked on the "Contact" button which gave me an e-mail form. I sent the e-mail and guess what? It bounced back as undeliverable as the address was unknown.

What a shame that all that effort and exceptional product promotion is wasted!

Basingstoke venue attracts major international stars

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
20th October 2006.

Basingstoke venue attracts major international stars

On 5 December, The Academy in Basingstoke is hosting a live performance by the internationally-acclaimed SAS Band.

This is nothing to do with the Army. As John Hicks, General Manager of the Worting Road family entertainment centre, explained: “For those who have not been blessed by these gatherings of musical talent from far and wide, I would like to explain a little about these exclusive concerts”

“Formed by Spike Edney, the keyboard player with the legendary Queen band and whose musical biography is the most amazing I have ever read, this ensemble of singers and musicians gather yearly to have a great time together. They all play live, they are all of an impressively high standard and they are all enjoying the show as much as the audience.”

The line-up for the 5th December includes Spike himself with Jamie Moses (guitar player for Paul Young), Neil Murray, Johnny Marter, Steve Hamilton, Andy Bush, Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann’s Earth Band), Madeline Bell, Jeff Scott Soto (who recorded with Ozzy Osbourne, White Snake and Genesis), Tom Robinson (of Tom Robinson’s Band fame) and the inimitable Toyah Willcox.

Full details of the band and Spike, who many will remember from Live Aid when he appeared on stage with the legendary Freddie Mercury, can be found on the SAS Band website at www.sasband.com.

The Academy is Basingstoke’s only 24 hours, 7 days a week, Snooker, Pool and Nine Ball Hall and live music venue. The doors open at 7pm and goes on til late with live DJ entertainment from special guest DJ and MC, Dave French.

Advance tickets (£22.50) and restaurant bookings are available by contacting The Academy, telephone 01256 327273; admission is restricted to over 18’s.

Further details are available on the Academy website (www.academyclubs.com).

As John explained: “This is a major coup for The Academy and for Basingstoke & North Hampshire. We are already selling tickets to people from across the region and beyond. It is good for the town to host major events such as this. Early booking is definitely advisable.”

WW2 Dive Bomber crew reunited at Fleet Air Arm Museum

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
19th October 2006

WW2 Dive Bomber crew reunited at Fleet Air Arm Museum

Friday Oct 27th will see eight WW2 crew from Blackburn Skua dive bombers reunited at the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

The Blackburn Skua was the first British built dive bomber and the first aircraft to shoot down an enemy aircraft in WW2 (a Dornier flying boat on 25th Sept 1939)

The reunion will see two pilots Derek Martin and ‘Jock’ Moffit along with two Telegraphist Air Gunners, two armourers from the HMS ARK ROYAL 111 and an ARK ROYAL 111 writer. In addition, Richard Blackburn Skua pilot and son of Dr Robert Blackburn the founder of the Blackburn Aviation Co, will be present.

The day promises to be a day to remember as the WW2 veterans reminisce and recount stories including how it was that Derek Martin was shot down in his Skua in 1940 and taken to Stalagluft 3, of Great Escape fame.

Among the Telegraphist Air Gunners will be Lloyd Richards who will present an address from a Canadian Skua pilot Mr Bartlett along with a photograph of him being taken as a POW.

In addition to the WW2 veterans a team from Bodo Aviation Museum in Norway will be present. The team are currently restoring a Skua and will bring a restored cockpit to add to the impact of the day. The Cockpit will remain on display at the Fleet Air Arm Museum for the remainder of the weekend 28 & 29 Oct.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum have an imaginative display of a Skua dive bomber as it was found under the ice in a Norwegian lake having been shot down in 1940 by a German Hinkle aircraft.

For full details, visit the Museum website at http://www.fleetairarm.com

Note to Editors:

The Blackburn Skua can claim several significant firsts to its name. It was the Fleet Air Arm’s first stressed skin mono-plane aircraft and also the first British aircraft specifically designed for dive-bombing duties.

Blackburn Skuas entered service with the Fleet Air Arm in November 1938, as a successful update and replacement for the Hawker Osprey and Nimrod biplane fighter aircraft, in service at the time.

Shooting down the first enemy aircraft of World War II would be a notable achievement for any record, and this too can be claimed by a Blackburn Skua. On 25th September 1939, Lt. Cdr. B.S. McEwan RN (803 Naval Air Squadron) operating from H.M.S Ark Royal, shot down a German Dornier Do18 flying boat whilst on air patrol off the Norwegian coast.

Blackburn Skuas were at the forefront of the Norwegian campaign, often operating at the extreme limit of their range and under grueling North Sea conditions. Despite these limiting factors, Skuas of No. 800 and 803 NAS, managed to successfully dive bomb and sink the German cruiser Konigsberg, in Bergen Fjord, Norway, on the 10th April 1940.

No fewer than 4 front line and 22 second line and training Fleet Air Arm squadrons operated Blackburn Skuas between 1938 and 1941.

The UK’s Fleet Air Arm Museum
is located at Ilchester, Somerset adjoining the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

It’s mission is “To collect, preserve, interpret and make accessible, material relevant to all aspects of the history of naval aviation and the operations of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm, the aircraft they have flown, the people who have served with them, and the ships and stations where they served, in the context of the development of aviation at large."

How to identify Management Consultants

A satirical guide on how to identify a management consultant
- with apologies to the many consultants who provide businesses and organisations with invaluable support!

ALL ABOUT EXPERTISE….

A shepherd is looking after his sheep on the side of a lonely hill, across which winds a narrow road.

Suddenly a brand new Porsche screeches to a halt. The driver, a young man, dressed in an Armani suit, Ray-Bans, Tag-Heuer watch, Cerutti shoes and a Boss tie gets out and asks the shepherd:

If I can tell you how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?”

The shepherd looks at the young man, and at the large flock of sheep and replies: “Okay”.

The young man parks the car, connects his laptop to his mobile fax, enters the NASA Webster, scans the ground using his GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel files filled with pivot tables, then prints out a 150 page report on his high-tech mini printer.

He turns to the shepherd and says:

You have exactly 1,586 sheep”.

The shepherd answers: “That’s correct. You can have your choice of sheep”.

The young man takes an animal and puts it in the back of his Porsche.

The shepherd looks at him and asks:

If I guess your profession, will you return my animal to me?”

The young man answers: “Yes, why not?”

The shepherd says: “You’re a management consultant”.

How did you know?” gasps the young man.

Very simple,” answers the shepherd.

First, you came here without being asked. Second, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already knew and third, you don’t understand anything about my business. Now, can I have my dog back?”

UK seal slaughter provokes call for improved legislation to protect seals

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
20th September 2006.

UK seal slaughter provokes call for improved legislation to protect seals

A total of thirteen UK organisations are calling for legislation to better protect seals following another slaughter of seals on the UK’s coast.

At the Point of Vastray on the Island of Orkney, four Grey adult seals, all female and pregnant, and one juvenile have been found dead with gunshot injuries to their heads. The area was left covered in blood in what can only be described as an indiscriminate act of slaughter. The images of the scene are graphic in their detail.

A member of the public came across the terrible scene and reported it to Ross Flett, Director of Orkney Seal Rescue. The incident has now been reported to the local Police.

Mr Flett said: “Once again seals have been slaughtered indiscriminately. I have seen many incidents similar to this and sadly they are on the increase. In Orkney, this year, I have noticed an obvious decrease in the number of Common seals around our coastline and this is not the first indiscriminate shooting of Grey seals I have seen this year. These animals were clearly no threat to fishing equipment where they were shot. There were 4 pregnant females - so that's 4 more grey seals that were killed because the pups didn't even get the chance to be born. In the pupping season, they come into the shallow waters and it just makes them easy targets. It's horrible, there's absolutely no need for it.”

Currently the Conservation of Seals Act 1970 (CSA) allows anyone with a high velocity rifle and an endorsement on their firearms certificate to shoot seals for the majority of the year. The CSA does limit the shooting of seals during their moulting and breeding periods (June 1 - August 31 for Common seals and September 1 -December 31 for Grey seals). However, shooting is still permitted either with a licence from the Scottish Executive or using the ‘netsman’s defence’ that allows seals in the vicinity of fishing gear to be shot [3]. Apart from shooting under licence there is no requirement to report the number or species of animals shot.

The CSA has many shortcomings from both conservation and animal welfare perspectives and was described by one MP at the time as the ‘Destruction of Seals Bill’ [4]. There are currently no estimates of the numbers of seals shot each year and no measures to prevent the depletion of local populations. Seals may also suffer a long death if injured but not killed through poor marksmanship. Nursing female Common seals may also be shot using the ‘netsman’s defence’, leaving their pups to die of starvation. Recent news [5], from the Government funded Sea Mammal Research Unit also shows that the number of Common seals around some parts of the Scottish coastline have in fact declined by more than 30% since 1997.

Often it is claimed that the seals are the cause of the decline of fish stocks and damage to salmon fisheries but there is no proof that seals adversely affect the total numbers of fish around the UK coast. However Margaux Dodds of the Marine Connection comments “It is important to note that the species most frequently targeted for this reason are in fact common/harbour seals whose diet consists mainly of white fish not salmon, therefore their impact on salmon stocks is minimal”. In 2002 BDMLR commissioned a report entitled ‘Seal Fisheries Interactions’ [6] by Susan Wilson PhD, LLM. The report traces research and debate from the 1960s to the present from seal researchers and fisheries scientists from across the world and aims to dispel many of the myths surrounding the actions of seals and their impact of the commercial fishing industry around the UK.

Much loved and much maligned, the need for better protection for seals is clear. As well as preventing the senseless deaths seen in the Orkney incident, seal populations in Britain are so important internationally that we have a duty to ensure their conservation.

Notes for Editors
The Marine Connection (registered UK charity 1062222) is a London-based charity, established in 1997. Over the last few years, the charity has progressed from a small voluntary organisation to one of the UK’s established international conservation charities. One of the charity’s main aims is to ensure as many people as possible realise and understand the importance of protecting dolphins, whales and porpoises and their natural habitat. One way they achieve this is through a mix of campaigning, education and research.Through the charity’s informative website and quarterly magazine, Seventh Wave, the charity encourages supporters worldwide to participate in helping to protect dolphins and whales and support various projects. In the UK, the Marine Connection carries out vital educational project work in the Moray Firth area of Scotland, which is home to the most northerly population of bottlenose dolphins in the world. Through the charity’s Adopt A Dolphin project, people learn more about how to help conserve these marine mammals and their fragile eco-system.

Disasterous world record attempt by Richard Hammond

Tragedy of world record attempt by Richard Hammond
By John Hicks
www.wordrecordattempt.co.uk

The UK’s popular “Top Gear” presenter Richard Hammond was in a critical condition in hospital tonight (20th September, 2006) after he was involved in a high-speed car crash while filming for the programme.

Richard, 36, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after a "rocket-powered dragster'' he was in crashed at Elvington airfield near York.

It is widely rumoured that he may have been travelling at speeds close to 300mph before the crash. It is believed that he was attempting to set a new land speed record.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds.''
A hospital spokesman said Hammond, who is being treated in a neurological unit, was in a "critical'' condition.

Richard, who often drives high-performance cars as part of presenting Top Gear, was born in Birmingham but lives just outside Cheltenham with his wife and children.

He first appeared on British television screens on cable and satellite channels presenting motoring programmes before switching to the BBC's Top Gear in 2002.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that an accident has happened while filming an edition of Top Gear at an airfield near York.

"The presenter Richard Hammond has been taken to hospital. The incident happened quite recently and the focus of our attention is on Richard at this stage.''

Top Gear magazine editor Michael Harvey told BBC News 24: "I've heard stories Richard was touching speeds closer to 300mph then 200mph, and clearly at those kinds of speeds the tiniest little thing has to go wrong and the speed obviously massively exaggerates the consequences of anything going wrong.

"This wasn't a high performance car, this wasn't a road car, this was a rocket powered dragster which bears absolutely no relation to the kind of cars which are the main fodder of the Top Gear programme - this was a car that clearly contained its own risks.''

He added: "I know every single precaution will have been taken but something clearly absolutely unaccounted for has gone wrong, and Richard has unfortunately suffered the consequences.''

I know that the BBC will have undertaken full health & safety risk assessments before this project was allowed to proceed. Now, many of the world record attempts I have been involved in have not been so inherently dangerous as Richard’s attempt but it is a reminder that we must all conduct a risk assessment.

My next project is working with Andy Kyriacou of 80’s pop legends “Modern Romance” (www.modern-romance.co.uk) who is seeking to set a new 120 hour world record for drumming, DJ Danny Dee who is attempting to set a new world record for dee-jaying continuously for 120 hours in a nightclub and Colin Stocking who is seeking to set a new nine-ball pool record.

This is a fundraising event for Children In Need Week (13 – 18 November 2006) at The Academy, Basingstoke, England (www.academyclubs.com). The Academy will conduct a risk assessment in terms of the building but, as they are already open 24 hours 7 days a week, but I will need to review the special considerations for people who will be trying to stay awake and perform continuously for considerable periods of time.

The primary considerations are medical issues – starting with the need to have qualified medical support available for those 120 hours.

I am currently developing a website, www.worldrecordattempt.co.uk, as a resource for budding record breakers and would welcome hearing from people who have undertaken, or who are considering, world record attempts with your experiences so that we can share them widely with each other.

Student guide to Public Relations (PR)

PR: the basics
By John Hicks M.IDM

Managing Director of Headline Promotions, Press & PR

Recently, I had the pleasure of giving a lecture to some business studies students to introduce them to public relations for small businesses. Here is my handout:

There is an old saying: “There’s no such thing as bad publicity. All publicity is god publicity”. I am sorry to disabuse people but that just isn’t true!

PR, public relations that is, is about getting people to talk and think about your business in a positive way. It can be a vital weapon in your business' armoury.

It's a way to get good publicity without advertising. And if there's ever a problem facing your business it helps you to deal with it effectively.

You can use PR to attract and impress key partners such as customers, suppliers, distributors, banks and other lenders, potential employees and possible business partners.

And PR isn't just for big companies using national newspapers or television. Even the smallest business can use publicity opportunities to catch the eye of its local audience.

My guide will help you generate positive media coverage and identify the media you should target. I will also tell you how you can go about writing a press release and give you tips for dealing with bad publicity.

Identifying your target media
The first step to getting media coverage for your business is to decide on your target outlets. Ask yourself who will be interested in your story:
· your local paid-for newspaper
· your local free paper
· your local council newspaper
· the free county magazine
· local radio and television
· trade, technical and professional magazines covering your business or expertise
· national newspapers
· consumer and lifestyle magazines
· national radio and television - but usually your local station will feed your story to the network if it's good enough

Get details of publications in directories such as BRAD, Willings Press Guide or Hollis Press & Public Relations Annual - have a look in your local reference library.

How to get media coverage
You could send out press releases on the same story to a number of outlets. But you'll need to tailor each release to the audience.

For example, a marine charity plans a protest outside the Japanese Embassy. The press release for the environmental and marine media highlights the campaign and asks other organisations for support. The press release for the local papers and regional radio stations talks more emotively about the issues and asks the public to travel to London to make their voice heard.

There are many natural PR opportunities:
· a new product launch
· new premises
· new members of staff
· an important new order
· involvement with a charity
· significant anniversaries, eg your 1,000th customer
· business partnerships

And you can create publicity opportunities:
· submit articles for publication
· commission a survey on serious or fun issues and send the results to the press
· suggest a newspaper competition with your product as the prize
· give expert opinions and volunteer quotes
· send letters to the editor on business topics using your business address

Building contacts with the media
News editors decide on the news stories written by their reporters. Contact the news editor with a story, particularly if you don't know any of the reporters.

The features editor decides on the longer analytical or background articles. The press release is one of the key points of contact with news and features editors.

Introduce yourself to editors of local papers and trade magazines - perhaps at a reception or an organisation's annual dinner.

Put journalists on your mailing list for background information they may find interesting, such as your business' newsletter.

Note that journalists work to tight deadlines - find out the deadline and supply your story well in advance. If a journalist is trying to get hold of you - respond quickly before their deadline.

Journalists' news agendas are different from yours. Provide what's interesting to them and their audience, not to you. But they're always looking to fill space. Putting facts down in writing - including quotes from you - helps before a conversation with them. Emails are good for cutting and pasting.

Dealing with bad publicity
Disgruntled employees and customers, crises and accidents can all generate negative news stories.

Make sure employees know who to refer journalists' enquiries to and ensure that only employees who are authorised to do so respond to enquiries.

If a journalist contacts you, check their deadline, carefully construct a written statement, and respond in time. It doesn't look good if you refuse to comment.

Show you've done everything you reasonably could to correct any problems.

If there's a tricky follow-up question, take time to put your case forward and restate it by written communication if possible.

It's not a good idea to go off the record when there's bad news. Answer truthfully the questions put to you. But it's not your job to volunteer every detail.

Be aware that any response you give may carry legal implications. In the worst case scenarios it might be worth seeking legal advice before making any response or making statements for the media through your legal representatives.

For a more detailed discussion, please see the links below.

Writing an effective press release
What's important to you may not grab the media. They may be less interested in the product than the fact that it brings environmental benefits, for instance.

News is typically:
· controversial, new or surprising
· amusing or funny
· directly important to the audience
· confidential or secret - until now
· linked with famous people or places
· linked with conflict, romance or mystery

You can write a press release yourself and seek to distribute it. If you would like advice, see the links below.

Alternatively, why not try a Press Release Writing Service such as the Press Release Writing Service (http://www.pressreleasewritingservice.co.uk/) which offers a fixed price service!

Distribution of your press release
Once you've written your press release, your aim is to get it covered by your target media organisations.

Find out their copy deadlines. Send the release to the editor, news and features editors and possibly the reporter who might write the piece.

Journalists are lazy (I know, I was one!). We love to have press releases e-mailed to us so that we can cut and paste it to save time and effort.

Check the release has been received and if further information is needed.

Photographs (such as the one I used with my marine protest - see above) can boost your chances of getting your story covered. If appropriate, try to include at least a head-and-shoulders shot of the person quoted in the press release. Or get an agency to take a picture of the person at its premises. If you're lucky, a publication might send along a photographer.

Non-media PR
Don't see your PR as just something that's directly targeted at the media. You can influence and impress people - including the media - in many ways, not just by getting a mention in a news story.

Try out some of these ideas for raising awareness of your business in your locality or your industry sector using non-media and activity-based PR. For example, you could try:
· giving talks on business and other subjects to organisations, schools and colleges
· joining an organisation and become a figurehead, their publicity gives you publicity
· sponsoring events such as a school fête or exhibition
· sponsoring a local sports team
· organising competitions, initiatives & surveys, possibly working with a newspaper
· meeting and talking to other business people, just being seen around
· helping with, or donating products to, charity
· teaming up with suppliers or customers to work on attracting joint publicity

World Record Attempt resource launched

Inside us all there is a world record, it needs determination and opportunity to bring that out.

The range of records is enormous - from small, personal, challenges through to the incredible Steve Fossett with his huge budget, global profile, attempts (who can forget some of the remarkable images, such as his flight around the world in the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer, pictured above).

Of course, some are downright crazy as the UK newspaper “The Mirror” recorded in 2004 when Guinness World Records celebrated its 50th anniversary. These ranged from the fastest talker to the most consecutive pogo stick jumps!

You may wish to do this for charity as a fundraiser, to help you publicise your business or simply to get yourself in the globally famous Guinness Book of World Records or, maybe, you just want to do it for fun!

Here in the UK, Headline Promotions, Press & PR have been involved in many world record events – from Danny D’s “longest live DJ set in a nightclub using vinyl” at Chicago Rock Café Basingstoke and pulling a Harrier Jump Jet down the runway at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton through to DJ Casper’s world record for “the largest number of people dancing the Cha Cha Slide” at Jumpin’ Jaks Harlow.

John Hicks, Managing Director of the Basingstoke-based small business public relations and marketing consultancy, has been involved in them all. Has he a favourite?

Well, setting a new world record for pulling historic Field Guns from Yeovil to Greenwich to raise tens of thousands of pounds for Gulf War veterans must be near the top of the list because, in those rare moments he can relax and be “casual”, he sports his trademark field gun crew sweatshirt. We reckon is getting so threadbare that he will have to run another event soon just to get himself some new leisure wear!!!

To be fair, in a press interview at the time, John said: “It was a privilege to help raise money for Gulf War veterans and their families. It was a tiring week for me and I was merely handling the media side of things, goodness knows how the crew must feel. But the highlight of the week must be the Parade in front of the Admiral of the Fleet at Greenwich; it was such an honour to be there and to see Petty Office Dave Roberts hand over a significant cheque for money so generously and freely given by the public on our route.”

In terms of media coverage, Danny D’s event was a spectacular success. This attracted national coverage on breakfast television – and, with John’s son Alex at the computer for hours on end, the whole show was also broadcast on the Internet (during the course of the 100 hours continuous event, the site attracted 11,000 hits from all over the world – mainly the US but from as diverse places as Paraguay and Vietnam!).

To provide support and resources for people or groups attempting to set a new world record, Headline Promotions Press & PR have launched a new website – http://www.worldrecordattempt.co.uk/.

This site is available free-of-charge to help budding record breakers to promote their event across the web. It contains information, articles and news plus a photo gallery which, along with the site itself, will be developed further over the coming months.

Record breakers can upload their own web page onto the site and, if they wish, have e-mails forwarded to their own inbox. If they do not have a web site then AFH Website Design of Yeovil will design and host one for a nominal £100 to get the “show on the road”!

Through our associate press release and press release distribution service, the Press Release Writing Service (http://www.pressreleasewritingservice.co.uk/), budding world record holders can have press releases drafted and distributed free of charge. Details are available through Headline Promotions, Press & PR.

As John says: “There’s no time like the present! Achieve your ambitions! If we can help, please feel free to use this new resource at www.worldrecordattempt.co.uk. Headline Promotions, Press & PR will also be pleased to advise businesses who wish to support such events gain maximum advantage from such sponsorship.”

The Rollin’Stoned at The Academy

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Basingstoke, Hampshire UK
10th September 2006.

The Rollin’Stoned at The Academy

The Academy venue in Basingstoke is hosting another of its monthly live music nights on Saturday 7th October with a Rolling Stones tribute show.

Endorsed by Keith Richards’ mother, who enthusiastically described the band as “outstanding” and suitably fit “stand-ins for the Stones” and “it was eerily like watching my dad” was the comment from his daughter, Angela, The Rollin’Stoned (http://www.rollinstoned.com/) promises something very special.

One “Times” reviewer – who claims to have seen them all – recently said “In my view the nearest thing to the real article”, “About as true to the originals as you can get” raved another and “Just like the real thing” enthused rock star photographer Gered Mankowitz at his recent private view.

So, it’s not just the thousands of enthusiastic fans who rate the Rollin’Stoned so highly, it is the people in the know from the Stones inner circle.

The costumes are shamelessly camp gaudy and fab, the instruments genuinely vintage and the wit irreverent. However while the tongue is never far from the cheek with the Rollin’Stoned, it is never at the expense of the music.

This band is not to be confused with the grotesque parody on parody bands that abound, nor a bunch of seasoned old pros opportunistically hitched on to the “Tribute Bandwagon” for an easy ride.

What clearly comes across, when seeing this band at work, is the passion they all have for the music. Their shows include not only all the classic crowd pleasing hits, but are spiced with enough eclectic selections from the deeper recesses of Stones album archives to satisfy the most demanding of “buffs”, all performed with the same vibrantly authentic attack and raw energy that characterised the original Stones shows in their prime.

For those who witnessed the Stones - Brian Jones et al - in their hey day (and if you recall it you probably weren't there), this is a chance to revisit lost youth. For the rest, now is a good chance to see what all the fuss was about.

The show begins at the Worting Road venue at 8pm, and goes on until late with live DJ entertainment, for those who either want to chill out in the bar or dance the night away on the superb dance area.

Admission is £7 on the door with one month’s complimentary membership of the 24/7 snooker & pool hall and live music venue (£5 to Academy members).

For further details please visit The Academy website at http://www.academyclubs.com/ - or you can telephone 01256 327273.

ENDS
